RD: When did you start painting/Drawing??
Dave Correia: Since I was really young. It’s just one of those things that’s been a part of my life for as long as I can remember.
RD: Where are you from??
Dave Correia: I reside in northern California.
RD: Main art influences??
Dave Correia: Martin Emond, Simon Bisley, Sam Kieth, Ashley Wood, Dore, Ralph Steadman, Zdzislaw Beksinski, Craola, Slayer, Cam De Leon, Chet Zar, Alex Pardee, John Wayshak….fuck, there’s so many more I can’t think of right now.
RD: Do you have to get in the "zone" to paint, or do you just jump right into it??
Dave Correia: It really depends. When I was working on my last book, I would do everything from getting completely wasted and listening to music, to just staying sober and locking myself in a quiet room. A lot of the time I have a movie playing so I can listen to the dialog. I almost always have to be at home though. I don’t feel comfortable working outside or around other people.
RD: What kind of Music do you listen to??
Dave Correia: I find myself listening to less and less music over the years. Mostly metal, some rap. There’s been a lot of Mike Patton playing out the ole’ jukebox lately. Tom Waits and Les Claypool are cool. There are a couple of cool metal and hardcore bands up where I live that are awesome, All Shall Perish and Murder Practice, they’re fucking crazy.
RD: How did you develop your style??
Dave Correia: I’ve always drawn the darker stuff. Even when I was in 1st grade I remember always drawing sharks eating people. At an early age, drawing is the only hobby I really liked. I guess, just growing up and drawing all the time, mixed with reading a lot of comics and watching movies.
RD: Do you have any crazy art gallery moments??
Dave Correia: Nothing more than my friends and I getting way too drunk and causing trouble. Maybe a couple of fights, destroy a hotel room, vomit on a dog. We have fun, nothing too crazy.
RD: What’s your biggest accomplishment in terms of Art??
Dave Correia: Every time I finish an illustration, there is a brief moment where I feel insanely accomplished. It’s a very invigorating feeling.
RD: Do people ever send you pictures of tattoos of your work??
Dave Correia: Yea, I get pictures every so often. When I was just at Comic-Con last month one girl showed me a sleeve she was starting with my work. It looked really good!
RD: What do you think of porn??
Dave Correia: I don’t think there is anything wrong with it. Most of the chicks in porn are fucking nasty to me, so it’s hard to fantasize about that. I like going online and finding videos of weird fetishes and bizarre things. I prefer to see vulnerable people dehumanized against their will.
RD: What kind of girls are you into??
Dave Correia: I’ve always liked girls with slight imperfections; crooked teeth, a lazy eye or maybe a missing appendage. I definitely prefer quiet girls who are creative in their own way.
RD: Do you have any "art groupies"??
Dave Correia: I used to have this one girl who would always send me things in the mail. She sent me a bunch of maggots on Father’s Day along with a card that said “Congratulations, you’re a daddy now!” She sent me some sort of skin fleshy thing that had a bunch of hair on it, but you could tell that she shaved it because some of the whiskers were all cut pretty even. And she drew a bunch of hearts on it. But the best was when she sent me a sheep heart. I was eating lunch and I got a package from her, so I sat down to open it. I un-wrapped the package and it was some sort of latched lunch box. So I undid the latch and pulled back the lid. Then I saw this nasty heart all slimy and old. There was a puddle of who knows what in the bottom of the box. Then the smell hit me. It was like someone had stuck their finger down my throat for me. I just vomited up my lunch. But I felt pretty flattered that someone had taken the time to do all this for me.
RD: Any Crazy Sexual Exploits to brag about??
Dave Correia: Just the fact that a guy like me is having sex is something to brag about.
RD: What do you think of razordolls.com??
Dave Correia: Good looking girls, killer bands, and amazing artists? What else could you ask for?
RD: Who’s your favorite razordoll??
Dave Correia: Do you have any razordolls with missing arms and too many teeth to fit their jaw?
RD: Do you think Porn will ever be an accepted art form??
Dave Correia: I’m probably the worst person to ask what is accepted as art. I don’t even really understand the definition of "art" . I guess if someone is making or creating something with a passion, and another person identifies with it, then its accepted art. But what the fuck do I know. I went to a Modern Art gallery recently there was this painting hanging on the wall; it was a white canvas with 4 black dots. When I saw it I was pissed and disgusted. How the fuck could something like that be hanging in a museum? But then I look over and there are 3 people staring at it like it was the best thing they’d ever seen. So obviously someone (at least 3 people) accepted that as art.
But If I’m watching a porno and some dude with a vagina is fucking a chick, fisting a goat with one hand, and strangling a midget with the other do I consider that art? Maybe. It definitely takes talent and a creative mind to do something like that. See, it’s that whole grey area of "what is considered art". Honestly, I have no fucking clue. But I do enjoy the idea of porn way more than the idea of Modern Art.
RD: What upcoming artists should we look out for??
Dave Correia: Alex Pardee www.eyesuckink.com, John Wayshak www.scrapbookmanifesto.com, Lucien Shapiro www.lucienshapiro.com, Brad Isdrab www.unethicalproductions.com
Sean Anders www.brokenskinstudios.com, Marissa D, www.onesickchick.com
Some of the best art I’ve seen in a long time, hands down. They’re all fucking amazing!
RD: Do you like Horror Movies? If so what’s your Favorite??
Dave Correia: I love horror movies. I think my favorite ones are the ones my older cousins made me watch when I was way too young to watch them. When I see them now I just think back to when I was 8, and they sat me down in this chair and made me watch them. I remember in one weekend they made me watch Nightmare on Elm Street, Hellraiser, and Evil Dead 2. It was awesome, they introduced me to horror movies.
My roommate and I watch a couple of new horror movies every week, but some of my favorites are: May, Session 9, Hills Have Eyes Remake, Cabin Fever, Dead Alive, High Tension, Cannibal Holocaust (not really horror, but definitely harsh), Pet Semetary
I prefer zombie and slasher movies that have good/creative deaths and gore. I hate when the camera turns away at the last second before an axe goes into a skull. I also like movies with fucked up imagery like Jacob’s Ladder and The Cell. I just watched a new movie called Feed the other day. It wasn’t a horror, but it was pretty nasty and disturbing.
RD: What’s your opinion on the art scene today??
Dave Correia: The art scene is stupid. There are a lot of good artist who are underrated and lot of bland artists that are ridiculously successful. Most of the stuff I see, I really don’t like. Maybe it’s because I don’t understand it, or maybe I’m jealous.
RD: What would you say is the biggest problem with society today??
Dave Correia: I try and have as little to do with society as possible.
RD: Why do you do what you do? What motivates you??
Dave Correia: Drawing is very therapeutic for me. If I didn’t have drawing, I’d probably be slitting my wrist or someone else’s. I try and draw every night. I think it keeps me pretty level headed and sane.
RD: Anything you want to plug, do it here??
Dave Correia: I just published a new book that I’m very proud of! Check it out at www.playwithknives.com!
