On April 25th, 2007, HEAVEN & HELL descended on Los Angeles with special guests MEGADETH and MACHINE HEAD. The Forum was packed for the third night of this rare tour. Of course, anytime Dio comes to town, it's not just the dragons and demons that stir. Metal fans of all ages came out of the woodwork to see this latter-day Black Sabbath reunion, consisting of the talented
Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, Vinny Appice, Scott Warren on Keyboards
and of course one Ronnie James Dio. Thousands packed the arena for this unforgettable show. Although both HEAVEN AND HELL and MEGADETH are reason enough to come to the show, the most surprising act of the night was MACHINE HEAD.
MACHINE HEAD instantly put out and impressive and massive wall of guitar, with the energy of a bee hive being hit with a hammer. The crowd started banging their heads to the rhythmic and energetic riffs that fired from the stage. They opened the show with "
Imperium," from 2004's Through the Ashes of Empires
. The band is certainly more focused and enthusiastic than ever (no more nu-metal bullshit) and they gracefully segued into "
Now I Lay Thee Down," off of their latest record The Blackening. As the mosh pit thrived and the sea of people expanded, Robert Flynn took a moment to address the crowd directly. He talked about an article published in a conservative magazine entitle "
The Aesthetics of Hate," the article which said "goodbye Dimebag and good riddance" also spoke unkindly about both Dimebag, PANTERA and fans of metal music. This atrocious quote got the audience riled up and yelling "fuck that." Flynn, made note that Dimebag was not juts a friend of theirs but a friend to all and will be sadly missed. MACHINE HEAD then played an amazing tribute song using the name of the article. This song was not only emotionally charged but proved to the crowd that MACHINE HEAD is peaking as a band and are at the top of their game. They ended their set with "
Davidian" from their debut album Burn My Eyes, which Flynn summoned his guttural scream and left the crowd enthralled and wanting more. As MACHINE HEAD left the stage, Flynn said "if it wasn't for bands like Heaven & Hell and MEGADETH, there would be no MACHINE HEAD." It's refreshing to see someone respect the bands that influenced them, and it'd be no surprise if someone included MACHINE HEAD in such a list of influences.
