Review of "Rain in Hell EP" Done by Natalie
Aiden's Halloween release, the "Rain in Hell" EP, has the sort of
momentous melodies &
contagious composition that not only pull the already devoted fans
closer, but reel new ones
in. Although the words tend to reach out more to their angsty teen
audience, they seem to
creep their way into the consciousness of anyone who has dealt with
adolescent turmoil. By
feeding on such unrest within the listener, the effect of feeling like
you're not alone & that
someone else actually understands what you're going through creates a
sort of loyalty to the
band. Effective & brilliant.
For someone who personally struggled with destructive tendencies &
self-mutilating habits, it's
hard to not identify with particular songs. In the track "We Sleep
Forever",the dangerous
behaviours of self-mutilation are glamourized with such lyrics as "This
razorblade was meant
for me / Hey, call the angels / We'll mutilate insanity". Most may find
that these lyrics,
as well as others that touch on a subject much more extreme (suicide),
can be far too
influential on the majority of their fanbase. Although most kids won't
grab the nearest blade
& start cutting away at their own skin, the possibility alone is a
troubling one.
Aiden manages to lighten up the tone of the album by throwing two cover
songs into the mix.
Both tracks aren't too bad, but they surely aren't the best versions of
either. They really
can't seem to bring justice to the Misfits' "Die Die My Darling". Yet
their rendition of the
ever-popular Billy Idol song, "White Wedding", doesn't prove to be as
unsatisfactory.
They've stayed true to their Emo-esque roots, while turning up the
volume with the rock. All
in all, this album proves to be a decent compliation of everything that
Aiden is.
