Razordolls: tell us alittle about yerself.
John: I grew up in Long Island, NY. I spent a lot of time going to hardcore shows in Long Island and NYC growing up and saw a lot of people covered in tattoos and wanted to be the same so i got into tattooing. Im into painting, watercolors mostly, i like to cook. food is good
Razordolls: how long have you been tattooing??
John: ive been tattooing for six years.
Razordolls: what shop do you work at??
John: I work at All Souls Tattoo in San Pedro, CA
Razordolls: when did you get your first tattoo and by who??
John: i got my first tattoo when i was 17 by some guy in LI that all the kids nicknamed 'Oops' on account that all his tattoos came out shitty but he was the only one who would hit us underage
Razordolls: when you decided to become a tattooer, did you apprentice???if so how did it come about??
John: I pretty much fell into it. i was interested but not a lot of the shops in NY are very welcoming. i was getting tattooed by JacktheZipper at the shop he owned out there and he offered me the job when a few of his guys had to leave. i decided to dive head first into it b/c i was tired of working shitty dead end jobs at video stores and bowling alleys and i knew i would love it. I didnt really go through a formal pay your way apprenticeship, i got help where i needed it but pretty much pulled my own weight from the get go
Razordolls: whats the best thing about being a tattoo artist??
John: The fact that no matter what i know i can bring it with me anywhere in the world i go. Its like having a pirate ship you can write your own ticket. And you get to talk to a lot of hot girls thats a plus
Razordolls: you are from the east coast and tattoo here on the west coast ..are there differences in the style/scene,tattoo-wise??
John: there is a lot more black and grey west coast style tattoos going on out here as opposed to the more colorful traditional stuff
Razordolls: give me some of youe influences..tattoo and otherwise
John: i think though there are a lot more of a variety of styles here than in NY b/c tattooing in NYC just became legal again about ten years ago. Influences on my artwork in general including tattoos would be Noel Hare, Joe Coleman, Clive Barker, Jae Lee, lots of movies, lots and lots of comic books
Razordolls: do you have any fave tattoos ..on you or that youve done??
John: i have a giant rat fink osama bin laden bulldozer tank on my ribcage. its pretty sweet. as far as favorite tattoos ive done i really like this cowgirl tattoo i did on joe link and an anchor i did on mike conlon's hand
Razordolls: how do you feel about the recent surge of interest from the general public due to the TV shows about tattoing???
John: i think it is going to make tattoos more socially acceptable in the years to come. As soon as they came into the living room it gave a lot of people something to identify with b/c it was on their TV. it has already had a significant effect on the general outlooks and attitude towards tattooing
Razordolls: what are your feelings on scratchers and home tattooers(not studios)??
John: i think it depends on the situation. most of the artists i know will tattoo outside of their studio sometimes if its on a friend or whatever. usually in someones house or their own. but if youre never in a studio youre never around anyone who will influence you and challenge you to learn. if youre just looking for a cheap tattoo and you get screwed up by a guy pumping out crappy work b/c he doesnt know any better and he has a 'tattoo gun' hey man, cover ups cost more and im down to do them. scratchers are always going to be there
Razordolls: where do you see yourself and tattooing in 10 years
John: i dont see myself ever quitting tattooing, i guess like most tattooers i hope i reach a point where i can just do all my own work on my own terms and make a living while learning other things too
Razordolls: your feelings on porn..and heavily tattooed women????ie-RAZORDOLLS!!!
John: I love porn. ive loved porn ever since i was 4 and i found 'the stash' Heavily tattooed women its a given. Theres nothing sexier than a hot girl with tons of good tattoo work on her. Thats why i hit up Razordolls on the regular, ive been watching porn for 23 years and until now you couldnt just see wild looking freaky tattooed girls doing the nasty on film. Razordolls is definitely the coolest and easiest site around to see hot tattooed chicks
Razordolls: do you have a fave razordoll????and while were at it..fave movies and bands???

John: gimme 4 min
